CHHATTISGARH, India—UV radiation generates reactive oxygen species, leading to adverse effects on skin properties. Botanical extracts are multifunctional in nature having various properties such as photo protection, anti-aging, moisturizing, antioxidant, astringent, anti-irritant and antimicrobial activity. Therefore, researchers formulated creams with Curcuma longa extract in novel vesicular systems (liposomes, ethosomes and transfersomes) and studied their photo-protective effect by assessment of skin hydration and sebum content (J Cosm Dermatol. 2011;10(4):260-65).

The alcoholic C. longa extract loaded liposomes, ethosomes and transfersomes having 0.5 to 2 percent w/w extract were prepared, evaluated for size, entrapment efficiency and incorporated into the cream. Their long-term interaction with skin (six weeks) was compared in terms of their effects on skin hydration and sebum content.

Vesicular size obtained was in the range 167.3 ± 3.0 to 262.4 ± 2.4 nm with low polydispersity index (0.2 to 0.3) and high entrapment efficiency. Efficacy was highest in transfersomal creams, ethosomal creams,  liposomal creams, the cream alone, empty transfersome loaded cream, empty ethosome loaded cream, empty liposome loaded cream and base cream, respectively.

The photo-protective properties of the constituents of Curcuma longa extract; and hydrant, moisturizing lipid components of nanovesicles with better skin penetration resulted in improvement in skin properties such as skin hydration and sebum content. The herbal extract-loaded nanovesicles incorporated in cream could be used as photo-protective formulations

Unilever Moves Ahead with Concern Kalina Acquisition

Unilever announced that, in regard to its October announcement about its 82% acquisition of Russian beauty company Concern Kalina, Unilever has obtained the necessary regulatory clearances in Russia and Ukraine and hascompleted the acquisition of 82% of the outstanding shares of Concern Kalina. The transaction will transform Unilever’s beauty business in Russia, giving it leading positions in skin care and hair care, as well as establishing a presence in oral care. It will also strengthen and rebalance Unilever’s portfolio and competitiveness in Russia, an emerging market with considerable potential and one of Unilever’s priority countries.

The amount paid to acquire the 82% stake is approximately RUB17.4 billion, approximately RUB0.7 billion higher than the amount previously announced, reflecting a number of adjustments in respect of cash equivalent items. The enterprise value for 100% of Concern Kalina is unaffected and remains approximately RUB25.9 billion. Also, Unilever plans to cause Concern Kalina to delist the shares from the Russian Trading System (RTS) and MICEX stock exchanges in December 2011.

On or about January 10th, 2012 Unilever will offer to acquire all of the remaining Concern Kalina shares in Russia. The price per share is expected to be RUB 4,267.92, as the highest price Unilever paid to the selling shareholders, but the final amount will be determined by Russian law. Concurrently, Unilever will offer to all holders of Concern Kalina’s American Depositary Shares (ADSs) and Global Depositary Shares (GDSs) a price per ADS/GDS equal to RUB 4,267.92, without interest and less any fees, currency conversion expenses, applicable taxes and government charges. This amount will be converted to U.S. dollars on or about the date that Unilever pays for the Concern Kalina shares tendered in the Russian offer and move the total sale forward.

In addition, if after consummation of the offer, Unilever and its affiliates own shares representing more than 95% of the outstanding shares of Concern Kalina, Unilever intends to purchase any Concern Kalina shares (including those represented by ADSs/GDSs) not owned by Unilever and its affiliates at a price determined by Russian law.

Beauty Bit

At this point, it doesn't matter if you’re a believer or not, nutricosmetics are here. I'm not sure if they're here to stay, but they're here nonetheless. According to a global report from Global Industry Analysts Inc. (GIA)—Nutricosmetics: A Global Strategic Business Report—the global market for nutricosmetics is forecasted to reach US$4.24 billion by the year 2017, driven by the increasing desire to move beyond conventional beauty solutions.

Asia has been the pioneer and success story of nutricosmetics. Japanese and Chinese cultures embraced this concept a long time ago. Unfortunately, nutricosmetics have struggled in the United States, with big brands such as Nestle and Mars launching edible beauty products that flopped; but that may be a trend of the past, as many celebrities are already using these treatments; and if Sarah Jessica Parker does it, well, you know what that means. Celebrities may be the golden ticket to this Willy Wonka-like beauty world.

A couple weeks, the New York Times wrote a feature about the newest beauty-from-within products. As expected, its copy was skeptical, but I suppose it makes sense—if manufacturers and beauty companies want to promise the world (a youthful world) in a bottle then they better be able to back it up or take the heat for false claims; however, the Times and other mainstream media do tend to be a bit skewed with it comes to the dietary supplement/nutricosmetics industry. Regardless, here's a look at a few new products that launched:

I'm sure you're familiar with Sue Devitt's products—famous for her seaweed-infused foundations. We'll she's taking nutricosmetics to the next level, and then some. Forget about ingestible beauty from a supplement or a beauty beverage. With Devitt, you can have your beauty and eat it too—on ice cream or yogurt or club soda—just drizzle the burgundy elixir (packaged in an over-sized nail polish-looking bottle with a dropper) and your yogurt just turned into an antioxidant- and mineral-infused berry treat. Apparently, Devitt noticed her skin perked up after noshing on goji berries, raspberries and blackberries, so she decided to create this elixir—no sugar, no calories.

She's not the only one thinking big. Major food companies such as Balance Bar and Crystal Light are introducing products that appeal to consumers' beauty appetite. Balance Bar's chocolate-flavored Nimble bars may pair well with Frutels' acne-fighting bonbons or Crystal Lights' Skin Essentials.

Personal care giant Unilever launched its nutricosmetic capsules—Strength Within—after five years of research. These soy isoflavones, omega-3s, lycopene and vitamin E and C-filled capsules sold out in four hours!

A man who's already made a name for himself is Dr. Nicolas Perricone with his "Wrinkle Cure", which offers the same promise as Unilever's Strength Within – to reduce and reverse wrinkles; to anti-age. But this is where the problem comes in: His claims lack substantiation. Where's the research, the clinical evidence, the published studies?

Nutricosmetics is a "fun" way to approach beauty and the preservation of youth; but that element may very well be its downfall. It makes sense that certain fruits and vegetables and fats and proteins would boost skin health, but are bonbons really the best way strengthen elasticity?

Hope you had a merry Christmas.

Merck Asked to Discontinue Sunscreen Claim

NEW YORK—The National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus Claims recommended Merck Consumer Care (MSD Consumer Care, Inc.) discontinue the advertising claim that Coppertone Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher “Protects across 100% of the UVA UVB spectrum."

NAD determined that advertiser’s evidence supported the claim that Coppertone sunscreens with a SPF of 15 or higher offer some skin protection for all wavelengths across the entire UVA/UVB spectrum; however, NAD also examined whether the advertising claim at issue, displayed through the advertising with a rainbow motif, conveyed the message that the advertiser’s sunscreens provide 100-percent protection across 100 percent of the spectrum, a message that was not supported by the evidence in the record.

The advertisement appeared in print, Internet and point-of-purchase advertising, and in free standing inserts and broadcast advertising. As the advertiser explained, sunburn and other types of skin damage are caused by the spectrum of harmful UV radiation from the sun that reaches the Earth’s surface and are classified by wavelength. SPF ratings on sunscreen products refer to the amount of skin protection that a particular sunscreen will provide against the sunburn effect of UVB and UVA radiation. UVA rays also penetrate to the deeper layers of the dermis and play a large role in premature aging of the skin, allergic reactions, and may increase the likelihood of developing skin cancers.

To measure spectral coverage at the UVA end of the spectrum, researchers measure the “absorbency" associated with active ingredients in sunscreens.  Further, the advertiser noted, there is no test currently available of providing information about the extent to which skin receives protection from the percentage of UV rays blocked at any given point of the UV spectrum, especially for the longer UVA rays.

NAD noted in its decision that it is well-held that while a claim may be literally true it may still convey a message that is false or misleading. NAD appreciated that the advertiser’s intended message was the breadth of its sunscreens’ coverage rather than the completeness of the protection. However, NAD noted, regardless of intent, advertisers are responsible for all the reasonable messages conveyed by their advertising. NAD was concerned specifically about the aspect of claim “across 100%" because “100%" is a quantified term of absolute completeness.

NAD recommended the advertiser discontinue the claim “protects across 100% of the UVA UVB spectrum," but noted nothing in the decision prevents the advertiser from promoting that its Coppertone sunscreens with a SPF of 15 or more offer protection across the entire UVA UVB spectrum, as long as the any new claim does not imply complete protection at every point in the spectrum.

The company, in its advertiser’s statement, said that while it “disagrees with the NAD's view about other conveyed messages, Merck Consumer Care will take the NAD's view into consideration in its advertising going forward.  Merck Consumer Care respects the NAD's program of self-initiated inquiries and supports the self-regulatory process."

L'Oréal Completes Clarisonic Company Acquisition

L’Oréal announced it has completed its acquisition of Pacific Bioscience Laboratories Inc. In early November, the two companies signed a merger agreement paving the way for L’Oréal USA to buy Pacific Bioscience Laboratories, and now the shareholders of Pacific Bioscience Laboratories have approved the transaction. The move gives L’Oréal access to patented sonic skin care technology, enabling the company to acquire strategic positions in the quickly emerging skin care devices category.

“We've spent a fruitful decade developing the Clarisonic family of products for consumers and professionals alike, and the exciting thing is we're just getting started, in a way," said David Giuliani, CEO and co-founder of Pacific Bioscience Laboratories. "L'Oreal's powerful marketing, distribution and R&D resources will help Clarisonic develop internationally and achieve our global mission—empowering people to change the future of their skin.”

Clarisonic is sold mainly throughout the U.S. and is also present in the U.K., Australia, Mexico, Canada and the Far East. It is sold through a distribution network that includes dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons, spas, prestige retail, e-tail, television shopping and www.clarisonic.com. In fiscal year 2010, Clarisonic achieved net sales of $105 million.

“Clarisonic is a strategic acquisition for L’Oréal,” said Nicolas Hiéronimus, President L’Oréal Luxe. &“Devices are emerging globally as an important new skin care category. Shiseido to Expand Bare Escentuals Into Brazil

Starting in May 2012, Shiseido will commence sales of the bareMinerals brand of its North American subsidiary Bare Escentuals, Inc. into Brazil via Shiseido’s wholly owned subsidiary, Shiseido do Brasil Ltda. In addition to the Shiseido brand targeting the prestige segment, bareMinerals has a strategic role to tackle the country’s rapidly growing entry-prestige segment with its unique value of natural and mineral origin. Product sales will be carried out through e-commerce and retail sales, including standalone bareMinerals boutiques, with the aim of achieving 100+ stores handling brand products over the next five years.

This will be the first time for bareMinerals to be marketed in South America and is a direct result of the Shiseido Group’s strategy to realize synergy between its global portfolio management and Bare Escentuals.

Following the commencement of sales via a distributor in 1996 and establishing the wholly owned subsidiary Shiseido do Brasil Ltda. in 2000, Shiseido is currently selling its global brand Shiseido prestige cosmetics at approximately 140 cosmetics specialty stores in Brazil.

On the back of overall stable economic growth, Brazil has seen a steady rise in the middle-income group, which has stimulated consumption and contributed to double-digit growth in the beauty market in the past few years. Market scale has expanded to ¥2.4 trillion yen, achieving third place in the global beauty market, ranking after the United States and Japan. Also, supported by such active domestic demand along with dramatic social changes, Brazil became top in the world in terms of social networking services (SNS), with approximately 90% of Brazilians active on at least one social network.

Since acquiring Bare Escentuals, the Shiseido Group has actively embraced a growth strategy to further develop the international business of bareMinerals by leveraging its expansive global network. Regarding Brazil, however, not only can bareMinerals be marketed through the existing Shiseido sales network, but it matches current market needs in that consumers are actively upgrading from the mass to entry-prestige segment. Brazil is also a prime market in which to leverage its SNS marketing expertise, which is recognized as a leading force in the United States.

Study Shows Scents, Not Celebrity, Drive Fragrance Consumption

Despite the influx of celebrity-endorsed fragrances, it’s scents over celebrity association that sells fragrances according to a new study from Total Beauty Media Group. When women were asked how they chose and purchased fragrances, scent strips and in-store trials were the key drivers. While celebrity products and endorsements receive buzz and build awareness, consumers were reluctant to admit that celebrity associations were influential to their purchase behaviors in the fragrance category.

Using its library of audience data, Total Beauty asked more than 480 women about their fragrance consumption and purchasing habits. Fifty-nine percent of respondents said that scent samples and in-store trials were the most influential factors in their buying decisions. Findings from the study also concluded that in an uncertain economy, women consistently view fragrance as a luxury they’re willing to pay for. Notably, 40% of women in the lowest income bracket (household income under $25,000 per year) purchased fragrances at specialty retailers and not mass merchants, thus transforming the shopping experience into one of indulgence.

“What’s fascinating is that 40% of women with a household income under $25,000 spent upwards of $150 on fragrance over the past 12 months,” said Ethelbert Williams, head of marketing, Total Beauty Media Group. “Women are simply willing to pay for scent, regardless of the economy.”

Additional findings from the study include:

Wealthier women are more likely to purchase fragrances when there is a free gift with the purchase.Eighteen percent of respondents with an annual household income of more than $150,000 were enticed to purchase a fragrance when they received a free gift with purchase, whereas less than 8.5% of women with lower household incomes were influenced.Women over the age of 55 are more apt to treat themselves to fragrances.Seventy-one percent of respondents in the 55+ age group spent $50–149 on fragrances over the last year, but only 43% purchased fragrances as a gift. The higher a woman’s income, the more likely she is to be influenced by a celebrity endorsement.Respondents in the $150,000+ income bracket were twice as likely to be influenced by celebrity cache.

AVIGNON, France—In response the growing demand by Canadian consumers, Naturex opened a subsidiary in Toronto. This branch is providing current and future customers with the full product portfolio and the latest innovations from Naturex. Allowing local flexibility, the new premises in the Ontario region includes a warehouse, together with a sales office. This office is headed by Maxence Duprez, sales director, and will support the development of both the food and nutraceutical/pharmaceutical markets.

The Canadian market presents many similarities to the US market where Naturex has been successfully operating since 1997. However, there are also significant differences, for instance the regulatory rules and consumer expectations are quite distinct. “Our office in Toronto is targeting the specific needs of the Canadian market" Duprez said. “It gives us the opportunity to enhance the relationship with our existing clients as well as prospecting new one."

New School Exfoliation

At SupplySide East, Ameann DeJohn discussed new school exfoliation through delivery systems that boost efficacy. Sure there are the mainstay exfoliatants—enzymes, alpha hydroxy acids, vitamins A and C—with their pros and cons; but a new generation of delivery systems beyond liposomes, micocapsules, niosomes, etc., are helping active ingredients stay on skin longer and work at deeper levels. Check out the slide show we posted for all the deets.

And the countdown for Christmas begins …
